The Genetic Basis

For a horse to be born Splash White Palomino, it must receive the following combination from its parents:

  • To have the red base (Chestnut), this animal necessarily inherited a recessive (e) allele from the sire and another from the dam. Both parents carried the red factor.
  • Its diluted color (golden/cream) results from different genes meeting: it received the dilution gene (Cr) from only one parent.
  • The Splash White pattern was inherited from at least one parent carrying the (Sw2) allele.
